  • Verdict:
Still, Assassin's Creed 2 is quite fun during the sequences you can run at full speed. The overall feeling of sneaking around a filled world, dispatching archers, sneaking up on unsuspecting targets, and beating the crud out of cheating husbands is extremely well done. When you also add in the upgrades for your villa, searching for collectibles, and just the fun you can have wiping out an entire city of guards, it's definitely one of the better third-person platformers out right now. It would've been nice to have a multiplayer mode along with the story mode, but that's where Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood will come in when it's also ported over.So long as the graphics are better optimized, anyway. It would be nice to have things running at sixty frames-per-second, even if it would mean that Ezio looked like a walking brick with blades. In the current setup, all models have visible wrinkles, scars, and mouth movement. All the buildings of the city are also heavily detailed, with windows, indentations, damage marks, and plenty of textures to go around. Needless to say, if Ubisoft wanted to, there are loads of ways to improve graphics performance. Hopefully the next installment will be a bit faster to run.On the plus side, sound and music are mostly untouched by the framerate issues caused by the graphics. Even when a cutscene animation gets out of sync or the framerate drops below thirty, the sound and music continues on without a pause. What makes this better is that the voice acting for Assassin's Creed 2 is actually very good. There are plenty of conversations to wander into and screams to hear when you assassinate someone, so you'll definitely have many chances to enjoy it. Half of the lines are in Italian, however, so you might find yourself getting lost if you don't turn on the subtitles. All the lines are translated for you, so you can turn it off again once you get used to the common phrases. The world is extremely large this time around, so the length of the game is equally enjoyable. There are multiple cities that you can enter, each with indoor and outdoor zones to explore. Each city takes hours to fully map and complete and each indoor zone usually takes an hour or so as well. Long story short, if you try to find every feather, open every treasure chest, unlock every memory sequence, and get every item in the game, you're looking at dozens upon dozens of hours of fun. There's no shortage of things to do.However, everything you do can be summed up in four different categories. You either find an item, chase down a person, assassinate a target, or go to a spot in the city. There are a couple different variations on that, like beat up a target after chasing him down, defend yourself from guards while getting to a safe location, and so on, but there isn't that much variety overall. The only real exceptions are the different vehicles you can ride, like horses, boats, and flying machines. Still, those rides don't last very long and end up as just a rehash of the usual four jobs. It's all fun, in the end, but it can get tedious if you play for too long in one sitting. So, after all that has been said, is Assassin's Creed 2 a port worth purchasing? If you like running around on rooftops with blades hanging out of your sleeves, then yes! The mix between combat and platforming is seamless, the graphics look great if your computer can handle them, the sound and music is excellent, and the game is plenty long enough to keep you busy for a while. Even if just as a warmup while waiting for Brotherhood, the $35 for Assassin's Creed 2 is worth it. Just be sure your computer can handle it before you make the purchase.

  • Verdict:
Assassin’s Creed II is one of those rare sandbox games that actually has a sandbox that you want to explore and play in. When you’re not assassinating enemies (fun) or further revealing details on the complex conspiracy (also fun), just standing on one of the perches overlooking one of the breathtaking Italian cities is a truly unique and captivating moment in gameplay.

    Assassin's Creed II Review
  • Summary:
Assassin’s Creed II, like its predecessor, is an ambitious third-person action adventure game with a clever conceit: You’re a modern-day bartender reliving your assassin ancestors’ adventures. But where the first game fell short—in repetitive, sometimes-monotonous gameplay—the sequel soars. It’s not revolutionary by any means, but it’s one hell of a fun ride. Read the full review
