In December 2008, the women and young people of Cap Rouge in Haïti found a new way to keep themselves out of poverty by playing chicken.
Oxfam bought 300 laying hens, feed, hen houses, a mini farm and all the husbandry training and vet support necessary to establish a chicken colony - meaning plenty of nest eggs for the 'plucky' local people in Cap Rouge and La Montagne, Haiti. Providing feathered friends to vulnerable villagers helped communities to develop sustainable livelihoods, with the bonus of supporting the wider community by strengthening local organisations, and increasing the production of food locally.
This gift will fund Oxfam's Making a Living projects.
